State-of-the-art Apprenticeship and Skill Improvement Training Facility
The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 built a new $25 million dollar state-of-the-art Apprenticeship and Skill Improvement Training Facility, located on 308 acres of the former Arsenal property in Wilmington. This training facility was built to benefit mechanics, construction field testers and heavy equipment operators. This facility, located within the Island City Industrial Park, began operations in 2007.
This approximate 342,000 square foot training facility will be a campus style facility. The core building will consist of 30 classrooms, office/administrative areas, and a workshop. In addition to the 30 room classroom training center, there will be an outdoor training site and an indoor heavy equipment arena, which will operate during the day. Much of the activity will be held indoors in the heavy equipment arena, so that training can continue even during inclement weather.
The site is home to nearly 23,000 members. The site plans are designed to host as many as 2,000 workers and trainees per year, with an estimated peak of about 400 students per day. The facility will host a number of different types of training, certification, and classes to its members.
